Answer
It is an intrinsic property of the soul, yet all activity is carried out by the three modes of material nature within the field. It is like watching a movie — you are only the knower of the thinking, feeling, and willing reflected on the screen, though the screen itself has no real thinking, feeling, or willing, because it has no spirit. Yet your own thinking, feeling, and willing can become fully influenced by what appears there.
Similarly, the three modes of material nature do not themselves think, feel, or will. Just as Artificial Intelligence is not truly intelligent — only a living being is intelligent — yet artificial intelligence can enhance the functioning of an intelligent person. It modifies and facilitates intelligence, but it does not possess independent consciousness.
In the same way, the subtle body consists of mind, intelligence, and false ego. Just as there is a physical body, there is also an emotional body, an intellectual body, and an egoic body. The soul identifies with these coverings, especially through false ego, and that identification creates bondage.
That is where detachment comes in. The soul is indeed making choices. Different contents are presented by material nature — thoughts, emotions, and impulses. The soul chooses which to identify with and which to act upon. For example, anger may arise due to the three modes of material nature, but whether you choose to act on that anger or reject it is your choice.
Even choosing not to be angry is another conscious response. Thus, while the soul stands apart from material nature, it influences the screen through its will. It is like an interactive movie — the material field presents possibilities, but the soul responds and shapes the experience through conscious choice.
