Answer
In every practitioner’s consciousness, there is a sincere effort to rise above the modes of material nature. Still, in our lived experience, we notice fluctuations. At times, our consciousness feels elevated—everything appears peaceful, clear, and spiritually nourishing. Yet at other times, this state can suddenly shift. Just yesterday everything may have felt aligned, and today we may find ourselves influenced by the modes of nature again.
These oscillations are natural, but the question is: how can we reduce their intensity and duration? Even if we accidentally come under the influence of the modes, how can we recover more quickly instead of remaining affected for long periods?
From the teachings of Rupa Goswami, we understand that one can reach a stage where such fluctuations gradually subside. To attain that steadiness, we must sincerely pray to Krishna and to the spiritual master, seeking their guidance and mercy. At the same time, we must remember and apply the instructions given by the great teachers.
A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada often emphasized that the path of spiritual realization is like walking on the edge of a razor—one must be extremely careful. Even slight inattentiveness can lead to deviation. Therefore, constant alertness is essential; we cannot afford negligence at any time.
There is also a powerful example in the prayers of Brahma, who, despite being entrusted with the immense responsibility of creating the universe, expresses concern that he might forget the Lord while engaged in such vast duties. In his purports, Prabhupada explains that without the Lord’s protection, one cannot remain on the spiritual platform. Thus, constant prayer for divine protection is essential.
To rise above material desires and remain steady in spiritual consciousness requires special mercy. This is not merely an intellectual exercise but a deeply spiritual process that depends on sincere, conscious engagement—especially through heartfelt prayer.
Additionally, association with sincere devotees plays a crucial role. When we surround ourselves with those who are genuinely striving for spiritual advancement, we become inspired and protected. Otherwise, the mind can easily become manipulative, leading us into distractions, institutional politics, or self-centered motivations.
The goal, therefore, is to remain vigilant, sincere, and prayerful. By carefully following these instructions and constantly seeking Krishna’s protection, we can gradually overcome these oscillations and stabilize our consciousness on the spiritual path.
