[Accepting instructions when one is not fully surrendered] You mentioned that if somebody is surrendered then only he is capable of taking instructions from the person who is imparting those instructions. Now if somebody has not yet developed that surrendering attitude and still if he has to take up instructions will he still be capable of taking those instructions or will it take time for him to come to that position?

Answer
No. If someone wants to follow the instructions, the first step is surrender. But surrender does not happen all at once; it deepens gradually. It grows according to our gratitude to Srila Prabhupada, our understanding of his position, and our realization of what surrender actually means — including the qualities of the person to whom we are surrendering.

To develop that surrender, we must hear about him and serve him. Service is essential. It is not that we first fully surrender and then begin serving. Rather, we serve little by little, and through that service, our gratitude and understanding increase. Gradually, that service matures into complete, surrendered service.
