Answer
As a sādhaka, you read and you chant. By sincerely practicing in this way, taste for chanting will gradually develop.
But understand this: if one’s consciousness is still gross, one cannot truly hear A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. One will only see the pages and the words. The deeper sound — the living voice behind the words — will not be perceived.
Real hearing begins when there is a relationship. As your connection deepens, your capacity to hear also increases. It is similar to knowing a person: the more you understand someone, the more you understand their mind. And the more you understand their mind, the more you can receive from them — because you can align, or “vibe,” with how they think.
In the same way, we have to come to know Srila Prabhupada’s mind. How do we do that? His purports are his mind. Through them, he is revealing his understanding, his intention, and his realization.
So by repeatedly reading, reflecting, and practicing, you begin to recognize his way of thinking. Gradually, even when you read a line, you may start to sense what he is going to say next — because you are beginning to understand his mood and purpose.
That is when reading becomes real hearing.
